During my school years, I extended my participation in programs that I could reach and serve change. Since my sophomore year, I have participated in the Learning Club program that helps tutor elementary and middle school students. My goal was to bring change and inspiration to the younger generation to show them I was once in their position. Growing up, I always struggled to find help or resources to get me through my education. During the Learning Club program, I not only provide impact by tutoring but building relationships with students to help reduce the difficulties they experience within life either as a student. This is because I’ve experienced hardships as a minority during my education, so providing empathy to students can help ease any obstacles. When tutoring at a learning firm, I ran into a practical student whom many other mentors found a challenge to tutor. Staff and learning club authority had a difficult time dealing with this student by being able to be corporate. I made it a goal for the student to try to open up with other mentors within the building, but it just wouldn’t work. However, before the start of a teaching session, I went over strategies and asked the student about real-life scenarios or difficulties he is facing today. Although, I did learn the child was heading into middle school next year, so he wanted to discuss advice from others and was nervous. I also learned that this particular student had a different way of learning, it was a sense of having breaks and relating to situations he experienced himself. Therefore, during this particular instance, I used leadership skills to understand and take action to provide a brighter impact on students and help them progress in school. Today, the student has been able to cooperate with others, and not just me tutoring him, but him cracking out of his shell. During that situation, I learned that a leader’s job is not only to take action but to help others learn and elevate. As I joined activities, I developed skills where I was able to have a voice and work with real-world leaders to build change and have an input on our communities. These activities can be important because of the opportunities and impact they can shine on our communities. Growing up, My parents were African American immigrants who had lost everything coming to the United States. I felt as if many people around my environment hadn’t understood the importance of leadership and inspiring others. There weren’t many role models or inspirations in my community or culture. By serving the schools that once served us, we can contribute to a bigger achievement in developing things to help progress our environment. Engaging in these programs was meaningful to me because I built confidence and raised my self-esteem. It taught me the steps of a true leader by growing and changing our world for the better. Learning skills that I could perform in real life scenarios or cases such as having a voice in what I say was significant. Building my values to the core, such as teamwork, leadership, and community, was my main takeaway. In my community, there can be many problems that have not been addressed in ages because of the consequences of not taking action. Through my lens, there is a lack of mentorship toward the youth. I was raised in a community, where violence was normal for everyday children and teens. I don’t see myself addressing it, I will address it to show young children they have a bright future. Although, this will be accomplished by being a better figure for everyone in my community. Starting a program where students can engage and participate in learning over content to help build resources and success has been a goal of mine. Moreover, I can address those challenges by taking slow steps in focusing on one individual at a time. This can then contribute to a bigger community as a whole by building foundational skills. Having the opportunity of becoming a Royals Scholar can help progress me and take me through the experiences of having an impact all around the world. Building leadership skills and serving them in events that take place as I head down into my future can be important because of the skills learned. All my life, I’ve been in an environment where I struggle to find money financially but the 20/20 leadership Royals Scholarship can take me into a different plot. There can be students and staff just like me who can guide me into taking bigger steps toward having the definition of a leader. Even though I want to benefit from this program, I do believe that the 20/20 leadership mission statement aligns well with me. The act of serving, impact, and change are three components that I’ve taken with me everywhere I went in life. In the places I head, my objective has always been to leave inspiration to peers around me.
