Growing up as a first-generation, Chicana, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges that minorities, especially the Hispanic community, face when accessing healthcare. My family’s own experiences have shaped my ambition to be part of that solution. It all started with a family health scare involving my dad, where we struggled to get the proper care due to the language barrier and the lack of insurance. I soon realized the healthcare system was different, and it wasn’t all about taking care of people. This experience began my passion for healthcare and led me to discover my interest in Radiologic Technology. I hope to make a difference in my community.

After high school, I plan to attend Avila University to pursue a degree in Radiologic Sciences. I’ve always been fascinated by the human body and being able to see it through a picture without causing any harm is by far the most fascinating thing to me. Becoming a Radiologic Technologist will allow me to contribute to the healthcare system by producing images that help doctors make an informed decision on a diagnosis or even a surgical procedure.

The Hispanic community, like many minority groups, faces many obstacles in accessing healthcare. My goal as a Radiologic Technologist is to provide culturally sensitive care and advocate for the needs of my community. I was always taught to help others in every way possible. For insinstance, giving the needy food even if there’s a lack of it in our own home. I believe everyone deserves access to life-saving tests like X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs. By working in a healthcare facility that helps a diverse population, I can ensure that members of the Hispanic community have access to these essential services.

In addition to providing direct patient care, my education will help me educate my community about the importance of preventive care. Preventive care Is Important, it helps you catch, then stop the habit before it causes harm. Working as a medical assistant (Certification earned in highschool) helped me experience how early detection and lifestyle changes can make a significant difference when trying to take care of your health and prevent health conditions. I hope to use my knowledge to teach patients and my community about living a healthy life and taking control of their well-being. Most of the Hispanic community struggles with their diet since more than 70% of the food consumed is carbohydrates. If my community knew how much it affects the body and how cutting back would prevent conditions such as heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and more. The problem is the lack of education. I hope to hold classes and teach my community, by volunteering at churches, schools, and more.

Furthermore, I’m passionate about advocating for health equality within the Hispanic community. By raising awareness and promoting change at the local, state, and maybe national levels, I hope to create a more affordable healthcare system for all. No one should have to go through what my family experienced with my dad’s health.

Working as a Certified Medical Assistant led me to pursue a career as a Radiologic Technologist and has been shaped by my desire to make a difference in my community. Through my education and future career, I aim to provide access to diagnostic imaging services, promote preventive care, and more. I believe that by working together, we can create a healthier and more equitable future for all.
