ESSAY PROMPT: Please compose a 600-700 word essay that addresses each of the following: Describe a need within your community. What do you plan to study after high school? How will your future education help you impact that need within your community?
My community is a very diverse place; Kansas City as a whole is a very diverse place. Which I am grateful to be somewhere where I have people from lots of different places. From that, language is a very important thing; people speak different languages, as we all acknowledge. As a child of immigrants, my mother does not speak good English, so I would always try to help her the most that I could in different settings. Especially in a medical setting, but different places have different rules, and because I wasn’t and still am not 18, sometimes I wasn’t allowed to translate. Which isn’t that big of an issue because, for the most part, they have translators. The thing is that my mom found it difficult with other translators because a lot of the time it was virtual; it was hard to hear them or for them to understand her through the microphone. Although I want to be a nurse and not only a translator, I think it’s important for those of us in different career paths who speak other languages to be able to be there for our community. I feel like it is something small that already had the virtual translator solutions. We have to remember that anything and anyone can really make a difference; that’s what I hope I can do. I hope I can contribute a small part of me being bilingual to make at least one more person more comfortable. A good trip to the doctors and a good encounter with people can really change someone’s experience for the best. I am currently in a certified nursing aid program and will be graduating high school with my CNA certificate. This summer I hope to start working as a CNA in different facilities before heading to college. Although I won’t be certified as a translator at that point, I hope that I can learn how to help people on a deeper level. To help them feel more comfortable within my community and to know that I can help them even more if they only speak Spanish. Even if it’s not about language, I actually want to help people, whether it’s this summer as a CNA or in the future as a nurse. Kindness goes a long way, and sometimes it does just take that one person to be kind to make their whole day better. My overall community is something that I do love and want to help. I was to stay here in Kansas City and go where I grew up going. Help other people love my community as much as I do and show how nice people can be. Overall, I really have dedication to going to school; I’m committed to Pittsburg State University, and I hope that I love it. I hope that I’ll be where I want to be after those 4 years. I’ll be able to work within my community or even my new community if I have one. Because even though I want to use my knowledge of a second language to help my community. I think it’s just the fact that from experience I know that is a way to make people feel okay, feel comfortable. For people to not rather stay home than to go to the doctors and not feel understood to the full extent. Like I have seen my mother want to do, want to stay home because she wasn’t understood or made to feel comfortable. I want to be there for my community and help at least one person and make it a positive experience.
