When it comes to leadership, I would say the most important experience would be my role in student council. I feel like everyone has to have different experiences, deal with different things, and deal with other people. Student council has allowed just that for me and given me the opportunity to use my leadership skills. Within student council, I have been able to be in different positions, both representative and member. Having different experiences is a way to see things in a different light. A way to have an understanding of the different positions that everyone has and how people may feel or may need when it comes to working as a team.
In student council I have been a freshman representative, which I was doing event coordination and fundraising. This is such a special skill to have because coordination, although this was specifically for an event, is a really important skill. Being able to coordinate is a way of getting everything and everyone together to be able to plan. Planning and having an understanding of what is happening is how everything is going to get done. Along with being able to work with people and have an understanding of how people work and what you need to do when something isn’t coordinating.
Sophomore year, as a representative, I was doing school spirit. For any school spirit, I and my classmates were on it. We worked a lot with pep rally, which was nice and even more of an experience. I think this was a good experience because Spirit Week was a small part of the bigger picture of being a pep rally. So, seeing that there is leadership even in the small parts was something that was really neat to realize.
My junior year I was a member, which meant I was able to help with everything and anything that was needed. Which was amazing because although I wasn’t the representative and there doing the “leadership,” I was able to get experience through a different perspective. Having to do my part and listen to someone and the way that they think something should be done. Of course, I have my opinion, but I’ll use that to work with them then and with everyone else. It was a nice change to be a member in the sense that it was a different role.
This year, my senior year, I am senior representative, which is really cool because it marks a four-year commitment to a program. Commitment is another thing that I do see a lot of value in. Again, this year has been Pep rally, which is something that I have found to be really hard to organize. There is so much to plan to do within a little bit of time; the planning process has been pretty stressful.
Overall, I have learned that there are so many roles when it comes to leadership. It allows everyone to come together and get things done. To collaborate on anything and be able to do the best of everyone’s ability all together. I think it’s also important to recognize that there’s nothing wrong with making mistakes and learning from them. Although there are so many skills that are important to learn as you use them, we can make mistakes such as miscommunicating with people. As long as I take what I did wrong and try to adapt it more and try again, there is nothing wrong with that. To backtrack a little, there is always so much that I can learn, and after a year, every event, every meeting, I learn something different. Which just shows me that there is always more that I can learn.
All this comes to my point that I’m not sure if my future plans will go as I’m thinking. What I do know is that I want to pursue nursing at Pittsburg State. I know that with nursing there is so much to learn and with every day of class or work, there will be something that I’ll need to ask for help with or a refresher. Nursing can be teamwork in many different ways, with leadership in with everyone. I think it’s something really nice to have an understanding of different skills. Skills that I know elevate someone’s mindset for the better. Maybe student council itself has nothing to do with nursing. I won’t have to plan events or go to meets about how to execute high school events. I will, however use all the skills in nursing, in school, trying to collaborate with my classmates and my coworkers. Student council has let me know I can go into a career with a lot of others and not one where I’ll be in a room by myself or at home. I’ll be in a career that suits me, and I can excel in.
