Alumni Essay 32
I have worked hard my whole life when it came to school, I always wished to go above and beyond what was expected of me. My mother has raised me all by herself for 16years. Because of her I’ve always liked house decor, watching house flips on tv, and just admiring architecture with her. This hobby solidified in me, which is a reason why I want to go to school for architecture. There aren’t many black women who are seen in this field, I believe that should change. I want to be a beacon of hope for little black girls who want to work in the engineering/stem field, help them realize they are capable of achieving anything they put their minds to. Since a young age, I’ve loved to draw and create. Seeing the creations I make come to life makes me feel like anything is possible. While I look at today’s world, I see many amazingly structured buildings, but I also see many run down forgotten buildings that many people reside in. Because of this, I plan on achieving an architecture degree where I can make my creations come to life and even be of value to someone. Repurposing classic architecture into a modern, functional structure will preserve the past while ensuring a purposeful future. As an aspiring architect, I can shape dreams into reality, I would have the power to turn abstract ideas into tangible spaces that resonate with someone’s emotions and needs. Crafting a space that can tell someone’s story with beauty and a purpose. As an architect, I can tell the story of a community’s history and culture. Every building has something that’s unique to it, be it texture, style, aesthetic, or the way it interacts with the environment. I could help become the bridge between imagination and reality. My ultimate success and dream for my legacy would be for my clients to be comfortable in their environment. When they come into the space I create for them, they will feel like I’ve brought their dreams to life, and have met their every need. The idea of being able to influence someone’s daily life starting with just a sketch or a painting would contribute to me pursuing my college experience with success in mind. This interest in creating has greatly influenced who and what I see for myself in the future. My boldness, compassion, and creativity will be my legacy, it will be what people think of me when they see the things I created. When someone mentions me, even in passing I want them to feel profound fondness within their hearts, knowing what I’ve done for my community. I want people to think that kindness is what makes me me, kindness brings warmth and meaning into human connection. It’s shown through simple things, a smile, being patient, or even just offering them help when someone is struggling. Being needlessly unkind can leave lasting emotional wounds, it often takes less energy to just be nice. We owe each other kindness because you truly never know what people are going through, we can choose to show kindness and often kindness spreads. What goes around comes around, so we should put out what we want to get back. Having these hopes for my future and actively pursuing them has helped me grow as a leader. Hopefully my legacy will be how I envision it.
