Alumni Essay 39
Participating in the Youth Lead KC program has been one of the most transformative experiences in my journey as a leader. Before joining, I believed leadership was mainly about being in charge or speaking the most. Through this program, I learned that leadership is truly about listening, collaborating, and being willing to step outside of your comfort zone to create meaningful change. Youth Lead KC helped me grow not only in my confidence, but also in my understanding of how leaders can make a lasting impact within their communities.
One of the most important ways I grew as a leader was by learning the value of teamwork. Throughout the program, I worked alongside students from different backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. At first, it was challenging to share ideas openly and trust my voice in group discussions. However, as we participated in team-building activities and collaborative projects, I realized that leadership is not about having all the answers, but about contributing your perspective and encouraging others to do the same. I learned how to communicate effectively, respect differing opinions, and work toward shared goals. These experiences strengthened my ability to collaborate and taught me that strong leaders help bring out the strengths in others.
Youth Lead KC also helped me develop confidence in speaking and advocating for issues that matter. The program gave me opportunities to engage in discussions about challenges facing our community, including healthcare access, education, and equity. These conversations showed me that leadership includes having the courage to address difficult topics and work toward solutions. I learned that even as a student, my voice has value. This realization helped me become more confident in expressing my ideas and standing up for what I believe in.
In the future, I will use what I have learned to continue serving and advocating for my community. As I pursue a career in nursing and eventually become an obstetrician-gynecologist or midwife, leadership will play a critical role in how I care for patients. Youth Lead KC taught me the importance of listening with empathy, building trust, and working collaboratively with others. These skills will help me support patients, advocate for equitable healthcare, and ensure that individuals feel respected and heard. I also hope to mentor younger students and encourage them to pursue their goals, just as this program encouraged me.
The program also taught me that leadership is about responsibility. Leaders are not only responsible for their own success, but also for contributing to the success and well-being of others. I plan to carry this mindset with me throughout my education and career by remaining involved in community service, advocacy, and mentorship. The lessons I learned about teamwork, communication, and service will guide me as I continue to grow.
To me, “leaving a legacy” means creating a positive impact that continues long after you are gone. It is about using your abilities and opportunities to make life better for others. A legacy is not defined by titles or recognition, but by the difference you make in people’s lives. I want my legacy to be one of compassion, advocacy, and service. I want to be remembered as someone who uplifted others, gave back to my community, and worked to create positive change.
Youth Lead KC helped me realize that leadership is not a destination, but a lifelong commitment to growth and service. It gave me the confidence, skills, and motivation to continue leading with purpose. I am committed to using what I have learned to make a meaningful difference and to leave a legacy that inspires others to lead as well.
