Alumni Essay 53

My time in Youth Lead KC, has played a major role in shaping who I am today. Being part of this program for two years has helped me grow not only as a leader, but also as a person. It has strengthened my confidence, improved my communication skills, and helped me see lots of great future opportunities. Because of this program, I have decided that I want to become an electrical engineer. Without this experience, I truly believe I would still be looking for a path I want to take in my career and in life.

Before joining Youth Lead KC, I was a very anti-social and quiet person. I often kept my thoughts and ideas to myself because I was afraid of being judged or saying the wrong thing. Speaking in front of crowds or my peers made me nervous, and I avoided leadership roles whenever possible. However, this program has taught me and pushed me outside of my comfort zone. Through group discussions, leadership activities, and teamwork, I slowly began to find my voice and myself and helped me grow as a person. I realized that leadership is not about being the loudest person in the room nor titles, but it’s about listening, understanding, and contributing in a meaningful way with being able to serve and lead by example and actions.

One of the most impactful parts of Youth Lead KC was the opportunities and experiences we were given. We attended lots of college expos where I was able to explore different schools and careers, which helped me start thinking more seriously about my career. We also participated in workshops that focused on personal growth and connections. These workshops helped me understand how to work with others, how to speak confidently, and how to set goals for myself for the future. These experiences showed me the importance of giving back and being responsible for the environment and the people around us.

Through this program, I also discovered my interest in electrical engineering. Electrical engineers have a strong impact on society. They design and improve systems that power our entire cities. They help create renewable energy, progress communication technology, and make transportation and safety systems more efficient. Their work helps people live safer and more connected lives. I want to be part of a career that makes a real difference in communities.

Electrical engineers must also have strong leadership and communication skills. They work in teams and must explain complex ideas clearly. They listen to feedback, solve problems together, and take responsibility for their work. Youth Lead KC has helped prepare me for this by teaching me how to communicate, collaborate, and lead with confidence.

In the future, I plan to continue using these skills in college, my career, and my community. I hope to take on leadership roles and encourage others, just like this program encouraged me. I also want to mentor younger students and help them believe in themselves.

To me, “leaving a legacy” means making a positive and lasting impact on others. It means inspiring future people, creating opportunities, and helping your community grow. A legacy is not about recognition, but about the difference you make in people’s lives. Youth Lead KC has taught me that even small actions can create lasting change.

Overall, Youth Lead KC has transformed me from a shy student into a confident leader. The lessons and experiences I gained will stay with me forever, and I am committed to using these skills in my future as an electrical engineer to create a meaningful and positive legacy.
