Starting as a junior at a new school was intimidating. I didn’t know what to expect, but one thing I knew for sure was that I wanted to get involved. One of the opportunities that stood out to me was 20/20 Leadership. I was drawn to their mission and how it could help me grow socially and academically. After joining, I attended the first meeting, where Ms. Caitlyn was so welcoming . I could immediately tell that 20/20 Leadership was dedicated to exposing students to new careers, experiences, and personal growth.
Through 20/20, I discovered that leadership is not just about leading others but also about leading myself. 20/20 Leadership has taught me that I am in control of my actions, my future, and the choices I make. It has encouraged me to stay focused, avoid distractions that won’t benefit me, and explore careers, and opportunities that will prepare me for success. Visiting colleges like Kansas State University, Washburn University, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City opened my eyes to the possibility of higher education. These visits helped me envision my future and consider how I would finance my post-secondary education. Attending senior workshops helped me understand scholarships, grants, and other financial aid opportunities that can minimize college debt.
Beyond academics, 20/20 Leadership has improved my social skills. Communication is a crucial life skill, and through this program, I have learned how to confidently introduce myself, engage in conversations. Whether in a casual setting with peers, speaking to a coworker, or interviewing for a job, these skills will serve me well. Networking has also become an essential part of my growth. Attending career expos, speaking with professionals, and learning about different occupations have taught me the importance of asking questions and building relationships. These experiences have helped me understand that success is not just about what you know but also about who you know and how you present yourself.
Another valuable lesson I have learned through 20/20 Leadership is the importance of giving back to the community. Volunteering at places like Giving the Basics has taught me the significance of helping those in need. I have learned that being a functional member of my community means practicing selflessness and consideration. I know these will be essential in both my personal and professional life.
I have never been concerned about leaving a legacy, I do want to make a positive impact. My goal is to be a functional member of my community by helping the less fortunate and using my passion for filmmaking to shine a positive light on African American culture. I want to debunk negative stereotypes within the African American community and cinema, using my platform to advocate for equality and equity. I aspire to be a voice for those who suffer from injustice, standing up for what is right and making a difference in the world. To me, leaving a legacy means attempting to make the world a little better than I found it, and 20/20 Leadership has helped shape me into the person who can achieve that vision.
