Growing up as a Hispanic in a Hispanic household, I have been driven by a desire to make a difference in the world. I never really saw myself as a natural leader, but my experience in the 20/20 Leadership Program developed an understanding of the importance of leadership beyond simply taking charge. Through the program, I have discovered what it means to be an effective, compassionate leader, and I now feel more equipped to bring positive change to my community and beyond. Before joining the 20/20 Leadership Program, I thought leadership was mainly about decision-making and taking control of situations. However, through the program, exercises, and discussions, I realized that leadership is more about listening, understanding others, and creating an environment where everyone feels valued and heard. I learned that being a leader does not mean having all the answers. It means encouraging and empowering those around you to share their ideas, work together, and grow together. This shift in perspective has helped me refine my leadership style, and I have already begun applying it in my everyday life. I played volleyball during my freshman year, junior year, and senior years. It wasn’t until my senior year that I started applying leadership to it. When I did, I focused on lifting my teammates, helping them grow, and supporting them through victories and challenges. Coming from a background where my parents made countless sacrifices to give me a better future, I have always had a strong sense of resilience. My parents taught me the value of hard work, perseverance, and humility, leadership program reinforced these lessons. 20/20 Leadership reminded me that leadership is not about personal gain. But rather about contributing to something bigger than yourself and being an advocate for others. Whether it’s helping a teammate improve their skills or offering guidance to younger students at my church, I am constantly looking for ways to make a positive impact in my community. I plan to use the leadership skills I have learned to continue making a difference, especially for underrepresented communities. My ultimate goal is to pursue a career in law enforcement, advocating for people who often do not have a voice or the resources to create opportunities for themselves. I want to use my leadership skills to empower others, just as I have empowered through opportunities. The 20/20 Leadership Program showed me the importance of uplifting others and working together toward a common goal, intending to continue carrying that lesson with me in everything I do. To me, leaving a legacy is not about recognition. It is about the lasting impact you have on others and the changes you inspire. A legacy is shaped by the lives you touch, the support you offer, and the example you set. I hope to leave a legacy of kindness, leadership, and service. I want people to remember me as someone always ready to listen, willing to help, and dedicated to making the world a better place for everyone. I have learned that leadership is not defined by title or status, but by the way you influence and support others. The 20/20 Leadership Program has given me a new perspective on what it means to lead with purpose, and I’m excited to continue growing and using my skills to create positive change in the future. My journey is just beginning, but I know that the lessons I have learned will guide me as I work toward leaving a meaningful and lasting legacy.
