A friend originally convinced me to join the 20/20 leadership program because of the “free field trips and food,” but after the first day, it became readily apparent that this was a program where I could learn to be a true leader and grow my skills throughout my high school career.
For me, 20/20 was only the beginning of my growing dedication to leadership as I continued to join programs and take up higher positions in my clubs. My first true experience in a mentorship role was my involvement in Link Crew during my Junior year. My job as a Link Leader was to introduce an incoming class of 8th graders to our school and help them acclimate to the high school environment and rigor.
I enjoyed every meeting I had with my group of kids as I felt I was preparing them for their high school careers. I got to see my kids grow into their own personalities and gain some confidence in their new school environment. This experience with my kids gave me an appreciation for leadership roles and gave me the base skills that would carry me into my role during the 20/20 Olympics project.
In my school group, I served as the Head of Surveys and Student Outreach, where my job was to conduct surveys with the student body to allow them to voice their opinions on the state of our school. The information given to us proved highly valuable as it gave us a project idea that would perfectly display the unique history of our school while honoring the alumni before us. It was important to us to have the blessing and approval of our school’s alumni association to move forward with our project since it dealt with artifacts and memorabilia from their past.
I hold great pride in that project as I believe it serves as a wonderful display of the legacy our school has left and is still currently creating as the years progress. I believe it is critical to remember the history of where you came from as it is a crucial part of your development into the person you are in adulthood. That is why I wish to accomplish greatness for my community to leave a legacy that will stay in the minds of my school, family, and friends.
That is why I am so focused on becoming a great leader, especially through the 20/20 Leadership Program. The skills I have gained from my years in the program are what allow me to pursue greater opportunities than I ever thought possible before. Most well-renowned people who have left a legacy in the world have also served as great leaders. That is why I intend to use the managerial skills that I have gained well into my college career and beyond. I will continue to participate in clubs and organizations in college revolving around leadership. I will continue to utilize and strengthen the talents I have learned from high school to become successful in any endeavor I take on. My ultimate career goal would be to become a project manager in the electrical engineering field since it involves two of my greatest passions. With dedication and the support of my community, I feel as if my goals are well within reach.
This is how I have developed as a leader throughout high school and how I will use the skills I’ve gained in my future career. I believe that through my actions and aspirations, I could leave a legacy for my community and family to remember.
