I first learned about 20/20 Leadership my freshman year of high school on orientation day. We were touring our school and we reached the library. Our student council guides had explained that the entire remodeling process of the library was done by 20/20 students as their project. From that moment, I was instantly intrigued. I knew that as soon as junior year came by and I was able to join the organization, I would. Since that day, my life has truly changed more than I could have ever imagined.
Being a part of 20/20 Leadership has given me the opportunity to be surrounded by other students across the KC metro area who all have one common goal: to better themselves and their community. I have heard so many unique stories from people of various backgrounds, and it has allowed me to learn so much more about others and their experiences. As a leader, that is one of the most important qualities one could have. Being able to listen to others, and keep everyone in mind. As a leader you are working for everyone, and the people I have met in this organization remind me of that constantly.
One of my most memorable moments, where I truly understood the importance of being a great leader, was during our Junior Olympic process. Our school was a little behind in the planning process, and the rest of the leaders were in a tough spot, as we all had different ideas and directions. In that moment, it was very important to have someone to guide the group. I decided that I would help lead the group to create a unique service project.
We accomplished that, but the most nerve wracking part was presentation day. Just three students had tagged along for the big day. I was going to end up on a stage by myself, in front of hundreds of people. In order for my group to succeed, I had to make a sacrifice, and I put my nerves aside for a few minutes. After the presentation, many students had told me that I was brave, and even encouraged them.
After hearing that, I knew I would do it all over again. At that moment, I had no clue that I would inspire other students to do the same, and conquer their fears of public speaking. To be a great leader, sometimes tough things have to be done to achieve the common goal. Leading a life of examples allows you to leave behind your own legacy. What legacy you leave behind is up to you, and you can create whichever you like.
I hope that one day, I will be remembered as someone who empowered and inspired others to do great things. More particularly, the Latinos just like me. The ones who lack representation in higher places. I will show them that big things are possible, and it’s up to us to achieve the opportunities and equality. To ensure that I am able to achieve these goals, I will take one of the first steps, going to college.
This fall, I plan to attend the University of Kansas and pursue a degree in Public Administration and Marketing. WIth this degree, I would like to start off in a local position or working for a non-profit. Later on, I would like to pursue a career in public policy. The people representing us must be a representation of us. My leadership skills have grown tremendously through 20/20 Leadership, and I will definitely continue growing these skills for the rest of my life.
