A need in my community are more woman doctors as such as ob/gyn’s. I live in a more of a poverty area and they’re not many women that take care of their health. Black women are 3 to 4 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. Women in poverty don’t really have the insurance to get a ob/gyn. The lack of access and poor quality care are leading factors. Doctors are either refusing to treat black women or they treat them very poorly because of their race.

I plan on going to college to major in biology to become an ob/gyn. I have always wanted to be an ob/gyn since I was a kid. My inspiration to be an ob/gyn came from my mom having cervical cancer. My mother had cervical cancer from my 4th-grade year and she went into remission but it, unfortunately, came back when I was in the 7th grade. My goal is to help young girls not go through the things I went through as a child when I can help their mothers prevent them from getting sick. My mom was one of the women living in poverty that didn’t have a doctor to attend because they’re not many black women ob/gyn’s and they’re not many that would assist women who could not afford it. My mother developed cervical cancer which could have been prevented if only she had a doctor to take care of her. I want to be that doctor that my mom didn’t have for women who really need it.

My future education will help the need in my community by being the doctor there for every woman in need. Not because of their skin color or how much money they have. If women can not afford a doctor it doesn’t mean that they don’t deserve to be helped. they’re to many women dying everyday because of simple mistakes that could have been prevented. My community isn’t the only community going through this it is a world wide issue with more than just ob/gyn’s but more so the healthcare field in general.
