The first time I organized a protest, I was 13. The walkout took place at my middle school and was against gun violence. It was held on April 20th, 2018. As the student leader, I specifically collaborated with administration. I involved the student body by hosting sign-making parties and hanging posters in the hallways to raise awareness. The sign-making parties took place in the hallways during study hall and allowed students to create a culture of safety. The walkout was peaceful and gave many students the opportunity to feel heard. During the walkout, I led around 250 students onto the front sidewalk of the school. My speech kicked off the event, and then a few other students spoke in conclusion.

The second community protest I organized was against police brutality. The march was held on June 20th, 2020. After speaking with my loved ones, I decided a Black Lives Matter march was something Turner needed. While organizing, I contacted local law enforcement and Wyandotte County Parks and Recreation. Once I got approval to begin the march at Pierson Park and conclude it at Turner Recreational Center, I then contacted local politicians, accepted donations, and invited community members. At the event, I gave the opening address, followed by a 3-mile march down 55th Street. Approximately 150 community members came. As we marched, we passed community members’ homes. Some decided to join us while others came out to yell unkind words. I showed leadership skills by not yelling back but instead keeping the chants going. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, however, there are respectful ways to share them. Both events created learning opportunities for everyone involved. I am so grateful to be supported by my family, without them these events would never have happened.

As a young woman who aspires to be an educator, I believe working with youth is important. I currently volunteer with KC Farm School, Turner’s PTA, Turner Recreational Center, and at my school. I also organize Turner High’s blood drives, Trick or Treat night, and more. Inside school, I am involved in Student Council, National Honor Society, Band, Choir, Thespians, Drill Team, Link Crew, Black Leaders of America, and 2020 Leadership. I also work over summers at a STEM camp for grades Kindergarten through Eighth. Working as a camp counselor has helped me realize my love for learning new ideas and teaching others. I began helping my community in 8th grade as a part of National Junior Honor Society and have not stopped since. I have completed over 105 hours of community service and plan to continue leading my community through acts of service.

Currently, I plan to further my education at the University of Kansas this fall while earning my Batchelors’ degree in Elementary Education followed by a Master’s degree. I cannot wait to become an educator and come back to help my community grow. Teachers have a powerful position in the lives of so many people; it is thrilling to know I will do that one day. While studying at the University of Kansas I plan to continue my leadership by being a model student. I will practice excellent time management, and great study habits, and attend class on time. Being a leader does not always mean organizing an event or overseeing a group of people. Being a leader can be shown in many ways. I wish others understood leadership and how rewarding it is. I get to meet people with different views and gifts! I plan to keep leading my community and being a part of what unites Kansas City for generations to come.
