ESSAY PROMPT: Please compose a 600-700 word essay that addresses each of the following: Describe a need within your community. What do you plan to study after high school? How will your future education help you impact that need within your community?

In our community, one pressing issue is the mental health of our youth. As a senior in high school, I’ve witnessed the challenges many students face, from academic pressure to social struggles, leading to anxiety, depression, and feelings of isolation. Many students don’t have the support they need to cope, and the lack of accessible resources makes it even harder. While mental health awareness has grown, the need for effective solutions especially in schools remains a significant concern.
After high school, I plan to study psychology, with a focus on social work in schools. This path will equip me with the skills necessary to understand mental health and offer support to students who need it. By becoming a mental health professional, I can help students manage their well-being and succeed academically and personally.
Mental health issues in schools are often overlooked, mainly because students may not feel comfortable speaking out or have access to support. Teachers and counselors are often stretched thin and lack the specialized training to address complex mental health issues. My future education in psychology and social work will equip me to support students, especially those who lack access to outside help due to financial constraints or awareness.
Psychology is the foundation of understanding human behavior, and this will be essential in helping me navigate the challenges that students face. By studying mental health conditions, learning how to assess emotional needs, and understanding the dynamics affecting students’ well-being, I will step into schools as a resource for students and teachers. It’s critical to create an environment in which students feel understood, especially when personal issues impact their academic performance.
Social work will allow me to connect students with resources, such as therapy or community programs, that can help them cope with life’s stresses. Social workers in schools often bridge the gap between students, families, and mental health professionals. By studying social work, I will gain the skills to create a network of support for students.
The need for mental health professionals in schools has never been more urgent. Students struggling with mental health may fall behind academically, have difficulty forming relationships, or disrupt the learning environment. Addressing mental health in schools will improve emotional well-being and create a better learning environment for everyone.
By pursuing psychology and social work, I plan to advocate for greater access to mental health resources in schools. I hope to implement programs that teach healthy coping strategies, encourage open conversations about mental health, and ensure students have access to help. I also aim to educate teachers and staff on identifying signs of distress, allowing them to offer support and make appropriate referrals.
In the long term, I envision myself as a school social worker specializing in mental health services. My goal is to provide students with the guidance they need to cope with stress and overcome personal challenges. Addressing mental health early on and offering consistent support throughout a student’s academic journey can help them build resilience and succeed in life.
Ultimately, my education in psychology and social work will enable me to make a real, positive difference in students’ lives. By addressing this critical need, I believe I can help foster a generation of students who are not only academically successful but also emotionally resilient and well-prepared to navigate adulthood.
