ESSAY PROMPT: Please compose a 600-700 word essay that addresses each of the following: Describe a need within your community. What do you plan to study after high school? How will your future education help you impact that need within your community?

My track and field team stands out as one of my communities, a tight-knit family of diverse personalities. Each member specializes in different events, including hurdles, sprints, long-distance running, jumping, and throwing. Despite pursuing our strengths, we consistently support one another, recognizing our collective identity as a team. This sense of teamwork has taught me valuable lessons about resilience and the importance of sticking together. It has also demonstrated that a support system exists even when one stumbles. Track has facilitated the expansion of my social circle, introducing me to new people and fostering meaningful friendships.

Expanding beyond the track, my community encompasses a diverse group of individuals from different backgrounds and walks of life. Whether through volunteering initiatives like Operation Christmas Child or tutoring at The Learning Club, I’ve had the opportunity to make a positive impact and create meaningful connections. These experiences have reinforced my belief in the power of community and the importance of giving back. I enjoy helping others in my community as much as I can and volunteering allows me to do so. Volunteering has shown me that I can make a difference in the lives of others, which is why I plan to give back to my community in the future.

My participation in numerous programs within and outside of school, such as EY CMAP, JAG K, 20/20 Leadership, Upward Bound Math and Science, Black Achievers, JROTC, and student council, further reflects my commitment to serving my community. However, I believe there are still areas where our community could have better access to resources and opportunities in areas such as career exploration and certification programs.

Looking ahead, my ambition is to return to my community after achieving my career goal of becoming a Construction Manager. I’ve witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by my community, such as inadequate funding for essential services like education and infrastructure. Through my volunteering experiences, I’ve recognized the need for more resources to benefit our community, particularly in providing equal opportunities for all students. One of my ambitions is to establish an engineering youth center, providing students in my community with the resources and support needed to explore careers in engineering. This initiative aims to expand opportunities and exposure for students, ensuring they have access to certification programs and hands-on experiences in engineering. Additionally, I plan to use my engineering expertise to contribute to community projects such as infrastructure development, including addressing the pressing issue of road maintenance. Lastly, I aim to partner with schools in my district to provide more exposure and opportunities to students who participate in track and field, ensuring they have access to the same sense of community and support that I have experienced.

In conclusion, my experiences within my community have shown me the importance of giving back. By using my skills and passions, I hope to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, both through individual efforts and broader initiatives aimed at enhancing the well-being and opportunities available within Wyandotte County.
