Gene Denton Essay 39
If you look around my neighborhood, everything seems pretty normal on the surface. But if you talk to people my age, you would start to see a huge problem that nobody really likes to talk about, and it is almost impossible to get help for mental health. In my community, there’s a massive gap in healthcare access. We have clinics for a broken arm or a flu shot, but if you’re struggling with something like anxiety, depression, or even just feeling overwhelmed, you would often be on your own. Most therapists have waiting lists that are months long and if you do find someone it’s usually way too expensive for a normal family to afford. This is a real crisis and it’s the reason why I’ve decided that after I graduate high school, I’m going to study Psychology to eventually become a Clinical Psychologist.
Ever since I started high school, I’ve seen how much my friends and even some of my family members struggle with their mental health. It’s hard to watch someone you care about go through a rough time and realize there’s nowhere for them to go. People usually just try to ignore it or “tough it out,” but that usually just makes things worse. This made me realize that I want to be the person who changes that. I don’t want to just sit back, I want to be part of the solution that gets solvable.
To do this, my plan is to get into college and get a degree in Psychology first. That will give me the basics of how the human brain works and why we act the way we do. After that, I know I’ll have to go to graduate school to get my doctorate in Clinical Psychology. It’s a long path, probably another five or six years after college but I’m ready for it because I know how much it’s needed. I want to learn exactly how to help others by using real and proven methods like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which I’ve read is one of the best ways to help people deal with negative thoughts.
My ultimate goal is to take everything I learn and bring it back here. I don’t want to work in a fancy and expensive private office that only rich people can go to. Instead, I want to work in a community center or a non-profit clinic where I can see anyone, regardless of how much money they have or what kind of insurance they have. By doing this, I’ll be directly filling that gap I see now. Just having one more person who can actually see patients will help shorten those long waiting lists and get people the help they need faster.
I also want to work on the way people think about mental health in general. In my community, there’s still a lot of “stigma” which is basically just a fancy word for people feeling embarrassed or ashamed to say they’re struggling. I want to help change that by talking more openly about it and maybe even working with local schools to start programs for kids and teens. If we can catch problems early, it makes a huge difference later on.
I know that finishing all this school is going to be a lot of work, but thinking about the impact I can have keeps me motivated. Mental health shouldn’t be a luxury that only some people get to have but it should be something everyone can access. By becoming a Clinical Psychologist, I’ll be able to help my neighbors feel better, stay in school, and live happier lives. I’m excited to start this journey and eventually come back to help my community heal from the inside out.
