To me, community means life. My community is Wyandotte County where my loved ones reside and where I’m bonded to others through connection and values. Everything that occurs in my community impacts and affects me. Community can change and create a person. Individuals adapt to meet their community standards and beliefs. Community builds a sense of identity through structure, culture, and tradition.
I value how my community resides and functions, I believe we have a lot of space for improvement. My community is in dire need of genuine care and love for one another. Just a week ago, I saw a man lying bleeding on the ground of a freeway exit. His motorcycle slipped and crashed leaving his helmet completely shattered, his bike destroyed, and him severely injured. That night only two people got out of their vehicle to help him, it was me and my friend. My friend called 911. As she tried to explain the situation, the 911 operator hung up on us because we couldn’t calm down as she asked us to. Multiple other people stopped and watched, but no one called for help until I begged them.We told ourselves we wouldn’t leave this injured person until we saw the ambulance take him away. The sheer lack of compassion and care for someone in such a state made my heart forever break. People should not ignore others’ pleas for help in desperate times. We should not ignore the needs of others: you should gain nothing from helping your neighbor. My friend and I came to his aid out of pure love. I didn’t know him, but I don’t need to know him or anything to do what’s morally correct. This experience truly opened my eyes to the reality I live in. Our community needs to change. I will not stand to live in a community where we ignore such things.
Although that unfortunate incident occurred, the efforts of my community will not be in vain. Time after time, my community has been there for me supporting and helping me day by day to further my education. They have provided me with scholarship aid, Internships, and many opportunities. My career goal is to be an Immigration legal aid attorney.
I yearn to reside in a community where we value positive role models for our youth to look up to and aspire to be, to create a generation of honest individuals. We need a community where deceitfulness is unusual and honesty is rooted. We need a place where pure honor and appreciation for one another is easy to find. I believe through me and my heart, I can bring this community the life it deserves. Through my good effort and loving spirit, I can be the change my community needs. I am the change in progress for my immigrant community. I will advocate for them in law, through the law, and by the law. I will be an advocate for immigrants without a voice and without rights. I will be their mentor and I will educate and bring knowledge to the community. I will serve as a protector to all who seek guidance. With my upbringing and profession, I will be of service to immigrant families and work to prevent them from being separated. I will show through my work my true and genuine love for all, where I’m able and willing to be sympathetic and understanding to anyone who comes in contact with me. I want to show immigrant families they too can have access to the great American life and live with freedom and purpose.
I look forward to the day when I will graduate from college and have enough experience in my field so that I can return to my community and be able to make a difference. I can help bring the change that is needed today in my community. But through that need I will strive to be the best in my field. So that I can make my community the community I dream of for generations to come.
