Hello, I am Aumiyah Chatmon. I am 18 years old and currently a Senior in High School. My community plays a big role in my life.  I didn’t grow up as fortunate as many people, although it was a struggle most days. Those same struggles shaped me and my community into who we are as a community. Poverty is what we call it as a society, which isn’t a very good thing but it did bring the Wyandotte community together as one, we all look out for each other, from one family to another. So to me community means family.  It means alot to me because I have siblings under the age of 10 that will still be growing up in the same community as I did. I would love for my siblings to understand that our community is here to help us because it was always there for me in many ways like the school opportunities and the organizations that are based in my community. It’s also important to me because I would love to make my community better than it already is.  Two ways I will contribute to my community once I graduate in my career path and my eagerness to volunteer for my local community organizations. The two careers I would love to pursue are journalism and social work, which brings me to making a difference and effectively contributing to my community by teaching the youth, caring and learning the importance of Wyandotte County in all aspects of life. I would love to be able to listen to the youth and let their voices be heard throughout the community because their opinions and voice matter too. I would also like to contribute to my community by being a part of organizations and even start new and fun traditions that many people will remember for years to come. I also want to do things like start campaigns to add sidewalks throughout my neighborhood for the children that walk home from school or even try to get better lunches for all schools in the district, the list goes on. My siblings play a big role in my contributions to the community and also my eagerness of wanting to be an advocate for the youth. My community wasn’t that great for me as a kid but I want to change that for upcoming generations. My biggest goal is making the community a safe and better environment for all families no matter how big or small. Earning a degree will play a great role in my personal life for my younger siblings and youth in my community. I will show them that anything is possible and that there are great opportunities in the community. It would also give them hope or encouragement to go to college and get a degree. Pursuing a college degree will enable me to reach my career goals by giving me great opportunities, new experiences, new organizations, and even new connections. This will drive me to continue my education and career, it will also enable me to show who I really am as a person, which I am very caring, I have a big heart and want to help our society and my community as much as I can.
