Through my high school journey, I have had many opportunities to develop my leadership skills, but my favorite one is my role as squad leader in JROTC. My leadership skills as squad leader helped instill a deep understanding of teamwork, responsibility, and the importance of communication. My squad initially, was a collection of diverse personalities with various levels of community, a unit to share and a test of the leadership principle.
As squad leader, I was responsible for making sure everyone is doing what they are supposed to do. It was my responsibility to check if everyone was on the same page and if they understood what we were doing because in my squad everyone speaks different languages. It’s hard to communicate because in JROTC we’re not allowed to use our translating devices when we have a lot of stuff to do, so I was trying my best to make everyone understand. As squad leader it was really, really important to see my squad work together as a team even if some of them didn’t really understand what I’m talking about. It was really helpful to see the squad following directions.
Through this experience, I learned the importance of effective communication. I had to convey my vision clearly to my peers, motivate them to get involved, and understand the significance of our efforts. I organized meetings to brainstorm ideas, delegate tasks, and keep everyone informed about our progress. This taught me that a leader must be approachable and open to feedback, as collaboration is essential to essential success.
Moreover, my leadership experience has inspired me to seek out opportunities for growth and development in college. I plan to join student organizations focused on community service and social justice where I can apply the lesson I learned in high school. I believe that education is not just about acquiring knowledge; it is also about using that knowledge to uplift to the greater good.
In conclusion, my most important leadership experience during high school has shaped my understanding of what it means to be a leader. Through organization charity drives, I learned the significance of effective communication, resilience, and communicating involvement. These lessons have inspired me to pursue further education and social work where I hope that I can continue making a positive impact in the lives of others. I’m excited about the future opportunity that I had knowing that my leadership journey is beginning.
