I am involved in a multitude of different extracurricular activities, many of which I would be in leadership positions in.  I would consider each of the positions I hold within my respective activities important to their own degree. However, I would say my most important leadership experience would be my entire high school career.  I come from a family of mundane overworked stressed filled African American people. Being the middle child of an older brother and a younger sister, I never really had gotten the attention a growing boy deserves to develop into a resource for creating a healthier local community. After enrolling at my current high school I was able to experience an expansive list of dreams I’ve had since I was a little boy. I’ve created a friend group that will last a lifetime, impacted my local community through donations, met million dollar people through which I’ve formed a connection with them that’ll help me in the business world. This was all the result of being an outgoing and courageous kid who was willing to make an effort to express themselves. I also owe a lot to my school community for providing me with these opportunities to discover who I want to be as a person. In regards to my leadership skills, after becoming a student of 20/20 Leadership I have been able to realize the part I play within my community and the steps I can take to give back to the people that have helped me grow into the person I am today. Over the course of two years of being within this program we have discovered many unique and vital careers that impact local communities around the Kansas City metro area. One of the key moments that I will never forget is when we took a trip to a local community garden and saw how people within our local area are able to support one another and give to the people who need it more than us. This moment showed inspiring students like myself real world examples of what it means to care for the people around you. This lesson encouraged me to find a way to commit the selfless act of giving back to the community that has raised me. The way I have thought of giving back is to start a small business, my business would collaborate with other organizations that have found ways to support struggling families. Examples of organizations would be Operation Breakthrough, Harvesters, and Happybottoms. What my business would actually provide is an outlet that allows for the people who need these resources to come and get in contact with the respective organizations. I also had the idea that we would provide general items that are vital to the survival of everyone, examples of these items would be: clean clothes, eatable food, drinkable water, and somewhere to sleep. I believe that with the education from a college university I could achieve this major goal that I have set for myself in the future. For the next steps in my life, I have set my mind on attending Northwest Missouri State University in order to further my education and land a career in the business world. As a student, I plan to major in business marketing and minor in industrial design. I’ve taken an interest in business marketing because of my involvement in an extracurricular program called DECA. DECA is an academic competition through my school that has students design a marketing campaign for a random prompt. After one year in this organization, I realized my talent in communication and my enjoyment of marketing. This led me to develop an interest in sales and marketing as a future career. Regarding industrial design, I am a creative thinker and I take new approaches to common day problems. I would love to see everyday products that I have designed be used to benefit the lives of others who need these resources more than me. With industrial design I have realized that I can design solutions to problems that I have faced in order to give back to the community that has raised me. My entrepreneur dream of opening a business that supports a cause greater than myself. With both my goals in mind and my plans for the future I believe that not having to worry about finding financial aid would ease this process. Which is why I believe that this scholarship would benefit my future because I want to continue to put my best foot forward which will lead me into accomplishing my desires that I strive for and benefiting the community around me. Instead of helping students that are pursuing higher education, student loans would reduce the likelihood that I would be able to take the steps that are required to accomplish my dream of leaving a legacy.
