Royals Essay 29
The most important leadership experience during my high school career was being positioned as the group leader of 3DE. 3DE stands for 3 Dimensional Education by Junior Achievement. It is a national organization that turns education into relevant, experiential, real world learning experiences. The role required me to assist my team by making sure our team met all deadlines, decided how to approach tasks, and develop plans to accomplish our final project as a team. I was responsible for coordinating and scheduling the Teams meetings, sending emails, updating team members about the dress code, and making sure everyone was there on time to do their roles. This role helped get out of my comfort zone and meet people I didn’t know before. This experience taught me that genuine leadership is about encouraging others to reach their full potential rather than just completing tasks. Taking on this responsibility as the 3DE leader was an intimidating role but was a beneficial experience. At first, I felt overwhelmed and pressured since as a leader my role was to ensure everything ran smoothly and professionally. This position also quickly led to burn out, and I did not think I could continue being the leader as it was really stressful. However, I did not give up and continued being the leader with some support.
At first, I believed that leadership meant being in control and directing everyone’s actions. I understood that I was not directing and I was only suffocating myself. My teammates were capable, but my overcontrolling stopped them from contributing productively. I began to turn from an “ ordering and controlling” leader to a transformational leadership approach. Rather than directing them what to do “I started questioning what they required to succeed as a team. I also learned the key significance of my role in the group, and that was not just to mitigate my own responsibilities, but to allow others to grow their capability and take ownership of the project. I asked them to a brainstorming session with me to see what would help me become a better leader for the team. They said I should believe in the team and their abilities to manage their parts of the presentation. This really changed the team’s spirit by encouraging them to take ownership of the project, and value our work. The team environment became more collaborative and optimistic.
This experience helped me grow personally and professionally. I became more confident in my ability to communicate professionally and work with others. I learned how to be organized, responsible, resolve issues, and stay calm under pressure. I matured and became resilient and understood how to overcome obstacles without giving up. Most significantly, I realized my potential as a leader and realized that leadership is a skill that can be improved through experience, reflection, and growth. I also learned the significance of trust, communication and adaptability. I learned that being a good leader requires emotional intelligence and self awareness. I had to recognize my own weaknesses and be willing to grow from them. I also learned the benefits of patience and understanding. Every person has unique strengths, perspectives, and ways of working.
This 3DE experience quickly inspired my decisions to pursue higher education. I am passionate about comprehending the team dynamics and about how the organization helps high school students. The intimidating yet beneficial experiences express that I want to learn how “ a team can work together productively and more cooperatively. I am now inspired to study fields like Business Management, Psychology, or organizational leadership to “deliberately learn how to build up a plan to achieve as a team” while getting out of my comfort zone as I did during 3DE. I want to understand the leadership “concept” that goes past lawsuits and faults, study how to build assurances, encourage successful communication, and entitle others to take their title”. I know that the leadership skills I developed in 3DE will continue to guide me. I want to become someone who empowers others, encourages growth, and contributes positively to my community. Education will provide me with the knowledge, opportunities and experiences necessary to achieve these goals. I also want to challenge myself academically and continue growing into someone who can make a positive difference.
In conclusion, my 3DE leadership experiences educate me that leadership is a “group process” not just a “title”. It is about fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and capable of contributing to their fullest potential. By changing my “intimidating” obstacles into a beneficial experience, I have learned that genuine leadership is about encouraging others rather than just ordering everyone to do tasks. I am hoping to take this knowledge into college with me and to learn about how to build a productive team and become a more successful leader in my future career. My 3DE group leader not only prepared me for future leadership but also inspired me to pursue higher education so I can continue developing my skills necessary to succeed and make a lasting impact. I learned in high school about emotional intelligence, trust and shared accountability to new heights and am excited to continue learning in college and beyond.
