Being a leader is something that I have always done growing up. My leadership skills started at a young age. I am the oldest sibling and often am a leader at home. I enjoy helping my parents with my younger brothers and am glad I get to be a role model in their lives. When it comes to school, I have always worked extremely hard and have done my best to help others. I have joined many clubs over the past three years in high school. This year in a few of my clubs I was asked to step up into leadership roles. In NHS I am my organization’s secretary, so I get to help plan different events and activities we do as a club. I was also asked to be a manager for a book club I have been a part of since middle school. I am also my school’s Yearbook Editor-in-Chief. This has been a very important leadership role for me. I joined Yearbook my sophomore year and have worked really hard to be in the position I am today. As Editor-in-Chief, I help build the book, teach my peers, edit and review the book, and help ensure the book is being put together properly. Being a leader is something that I take pride in. I want to be the person that others trust whether it is in school as a club leader or at a job I am working.

Since Elementary school, I have always known what I wanted to be when I grew up, a teacher. Teachers have been my biggest role models and have taught me how to be a leader. An example of me being a leader in my school and community is that I intern at my school district’s elementary school. I am currently a senior in high school and am taking a college credit class through the University of Saint Mary’s. This course at my school is called “Teaching as a Career” and “Teacher Internship”.

Both of these classes have been so much fun and have introduced me to my future career. In “Teaching as a Career” I am at my school and learn about different parts of teaching. In this class we discuss curriculum, salary, how to deal with behavior, how to interact with parents, administrators, and other teachers, philosophies of teaching, handling a classroom, and more. It has been fascinating to understand teaching on a deeper level. In the “Teaching Internship” class three days a week I go to one of my school district elementary schools and intern there. While at the elementary school, I get to observe, help, grade, and bond with students. Interning has made me realize that teaching is a perfect career for me.  I am so thankful that this class was offered at my school, it has given me a head start on my career and future in education.

There are many ways over my high school career where I have demonstrated being a leader, out of all of them I believe the most important role I have taken is my internship. Interning demonstrates being a leader because I can be another role model for the students at the elementary school. I am showing that I am well-trusted and can handle helping out at the elementary school. I hope to continue to demonstrate my leadership abilities as a second-grade teacher. Becoming a teacher requires me to be a leader. I am excited to go into education and be a leader for my future students. I hope my students will look up to me the same way I have looked up to all of my past teachers.
