Senior Essay 10
Being a three sport athlete while maintaining a “student-first” mindset has been one of the greatest challenges of my high school experience, but has helped shape me into a leader in my school community. I constantly strive for excellence in everything I do academically, athletically, and personally. When I first entered high school, my mother wanted to encourage me in Cross Country by thinking about Hebrews 12:1 that says, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” This bible verse inspires me to persevere, stay focused, and lead by example. Balancing multiple sports with academic responsibilities requires strong determination, resilience, and the ability to influence others through my actions.
Throughout my time in High School, I have been blessed to compete at the varsity level in Cross Country, Track, and Basketball all four years. In high school, my coaches have encouraged me to be a team leader, and I’ve proudly served as Captain in all three sports. In basketball, I was honored with a United Kansas Conference Honorable Mention. At times, I juggled AAU basketball practices and games alongside school sports while maintaining a 4.1 GPA on a 4.0 scale. My demanding schedule has challenged me throughout high school. One of my biggest inspirations, Lebron James said, “Commitment is a big part of what I am and what I believe.” Lebron inspires me to remain committed to becoming a stronger athlete and an even stronger leader in the classroom.
Beyond athletics, I’ve also competed in regionals through the Business Professionals of America (BPA) program in high school, expanding my skills in leadership and professionalism. My leadership and strong work ethic have helped me earn Student-Athlete of the Month honors as both a freshman and a junior, gain membership into the National Honor Society, and be recognized with a JAG-K Spotlight. These achievements reflect the balance I’ve worked hard to maintain between academics and athletics.
I understand that not everyone shares my mindset, but I believe excellence as a student-athlete requires focus, persistence, and a clear vision of your goals. When I feel tired or overwhelmed, I remember the Bible verse my parents taught me early in life. Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.” This verse reminds me that my strength comes from God and that He empowers me to handle all things with purpose and determination.
In college, I plan to major in Engineering, a field that will challenge me to stay focused, show discipline, and persevere. As I begin this next chapter, I will continue to lean on my faith and the words of Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.” I am committed to trusting God and allowing Him to guide me as I continue striving for excellence. With the help of the Senior Leader scholarship, it will help me achieve my ultimate goal of earning a college degree in Engineering and becoming a successful, driven leader in my field.
