Senior Essay 24
When I think of a moment, I have demonstrated leadership around my school I think of my role with district events, having the honor of being a captain, and my volunteer work that allows me to help kids in my community.
At my high school I am involved in a huge number of clubs and organizations. I am a member of the multi-cultural club, Black Leaders of America (BLA), pep club, student council, and KAY club. In October of 2025, I organized a school event where students participated in a Powder Puff flag football game. Students from every grade either signed up as players, coaches, referees, or cheerleaders. The event was featured in our 2025 homecoming week bonfire that was opened to everyone in the community watch, enjoy, and laugh. In the midst of planning, I had to go through steps such as being in meetings with administrators and our athletic director. I had to become the coordinator and set up the event. Ultimately, my success with the event caused my community to have it as a permanent tradition for years to come.
The middle of my senior year I began my last basketball season and was named the team’s captain. I won majority of the vote from all my teammates and all four coaches to represent the varsity team and whole program. I was present the previous spring, summer, and conditioning season to help get better but also encourage my team as we all prepared for the season. By showing up to 100% of the practices and optional practices, I was able to earn respect as a leader to the team. Entering the season, I was awarded the KC Metro Classic Champion of Character. I showed an example of what great sportsmanship is and respect towards my opponents.
Lastly, I demonstrate leadership around my school and community by helping kids in my district. In my Advanced Via Individual Determination (AVID) program I am able to go to elementary schools and spend the day with the kids to help them with schoolwork. I speak to them about life lessons on skills such as responsibility, kindness, and respect. I also volunteer as a helper at the Kansas Kids Fitness Day. Also, I am a volunteer at the Recreations Center. The purpose of the building is to offer community activities at a nearby facility. We have hosted events for every season, set up and clean up, and take photos for families wanting to capture the moments. I have also spoken out at the middle school to promote clubs, sports, and potential classes to take in high school.
To summarize, I represent a leader in my community by creating new traditions and activities for my peers and their families, being a team leader and setting an example to underclassmen and new-comers that effort, presence, and encouragement is the expectation on a team, and being helpful to the younger generation of kids in my community and volunteering frequently. I hope you consider me as a candidate for this scholarship that I will use to go towards my college fees for this upcoming Fall semester.
