Senior Essay 30

Leadership and responsibility are lessons I learned early, and they continue to shape the goals I have for my future. I’ve used my voice, stepping up and giving others guidance, and helping both my peers and my community. During my time as cheer captain, a senior enlisted cadet leader in Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, and through community service with Harvesters I learned that leadership is about responsibility, teamwork, and service.

As cheer captain I had the opportunities and the responsibilities of guiding a team and representing my school at games and events. I worked to keep my team motivated during practices and performances. Being in this position taught me to speak up and advocate for myself, my team, and my community. Being captain means I set the tone and make sure everyone’s voices feel valued.

Serving as the Senior Enlisted Advisor and Sergeant Major in Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps strengthened my leadership abilities in a different way. In this position I help guide younger cadets and make sure the cadet corps stays disciplined and focused. My time in MCJROTC taught me that leadership is not about authority and superiors, but how to set an example for younger generations through my actions.

For me, leadership extends outside my school building. Volunteering with Harvesters – The Food Network, The Senior Madison Living, Special Olympics, and participating in other community service projects. I have worked to support people’s needs. Experiencing this showed me just how important leadership can make a difference beyond a classroom. Serving my community helped me realize the importance of empathy, giving back, and cooperation.

Leadership is something I hope to continue demonstrating in the future by building and providing environments where people can feel encouraged. Within my time in my leadership positions, I’ve learned that it’s not necessarily the position you hold but how well you’re able to help others grow and better themselves. Working with others taught me that a strong leader requires patience, communication, and the ability to support people with different abilities and perspectives. I believe these lessons will continue to guide me as I move forward into amazingly new opportunities, where teamwork and responsibility are valued. I want to mentor others, contribute to organizations, help keep teams motivated, and leave a legacy behind. By staying active in my volunteer work and helping organize efforts that support and uplift others, I plan to use my experiences to make a difference. I believe leadership will always be an ongoing learning process, taking initiative, showing commitment, and serving others. I am committed to continue to flourish as a leader while encouraging those around me to succeed as well.

With the leadership roles I have taken on throughout my four years of high school, extracurricular activities, and my community involvement played a major role in shaping the leader I am today. Each experience has pushed me to work harder, grow, and understand the importance of guiding and influencing others with purpose, direction, and motivation. Through these experiences I’ve developed a deeper understanding and appreciation for accountability, collaboration, and the importance of one’s effort. I’ve shown that leadership is not defined by a title, but by the willingness to step forward and be there.

As I move forward with my next chapter, I plan to carry the lessons I’ve learned and apply them enough to where I can make a difference, a meaningful difference. By remaining dedicated, I hope to strengthen my ability to lead while positively influencing the communities and organizations I become a part of.
