Senior Essay 36
Leadership has not always come easily to me, but it is something I have grown into through experience, reflection, and responsibility. I have demonstrated leadership by stepping up when needed, supporting others, and learning how to lead with empathy rather than authority. Over time, I have learned that leadership is not about being in charge, but about being dependable, respectful, and willing to help others succeed.
One of the main ways I have shown leadership is by being someone others can rely on. Whether working in group settings, participating in leadership programs, or helping peers, I take responsibility seriously. I understand the importance of showing up prepared, staying committed, and setting a positive example. I have learned how to communicate clearly, listen to different perspectives, and help guide conversations in a productive direction. These experiences taught me that leadership often happens in small moments, offering support, encouraging others, and keeping a group focused on a shared goal.
Through Youth Lead KC, I further developed my leadership skills by stepping outside of my comfort zone. I learned how to speak up with confidence, work alongside people with different backgrounds, and reflect on my strengths and weaknesses as a leader. The program helped me understand that leadership is not about being perfect; it is about growth and learning from mistakes. I became more self-aware and intentional in how I interact with others, which strengthened my ability to lead respectfully and thoughtfully.
Leadership for me has also meant being a role model, especially within my family. Seeing siblings and students in different grades participate in leadership programs has shown me how leadership can continue across generations. Being part of something bigger than myself has motivated me to lead in a way that inspires others to follow similar paths. Knowing that my actions can influence someone else to step into leadership has pushed me to be more mindful, patient, and supportive.
In the future, I hope to continue demonstrating leadership in my education, career, and community. I plan to use the communication, teamwork, and accountability skills I have gained to create positive environments wherever I am. I want to lead by example—by being consistent, respectful, and open to learning. Whether I am working with a team, mentoring others, or contributing to my community, I hope to be someone others trust and feel comfortable turning to.
I also hope to demonstrate leadership by giving back. I want to stay involved in opportunities that uplift others and encourage young people to believe in their potential. Leadership, to me, is about making a difference that lasts beyond the moment. It is about creating pathways for others and helping build a supportive community.
Overall, my leadership journey has taught me confidence, responsibility, and compassion. I am proud of how far I have come and motivated to continue growing. This scholarship would support my goal of becoming a leader who not only succeeds personally, but also helps others succeed along the way.
