Senior Essay 44

When I first entered my sophomore AVID class, I was given an assignment where we had to decide what community service looked like to us. I thought it was about following instructions and hitting specific marks. However, looking back I realized this one assignment is what changed my whole perspective on giving back. While many saw it as just another requirement, I saw an opportunity to address a real need in my community. I proposed a plan to volunteer at local nursing homes. I liked the idea so much that I asked my teacher for permission to turn the assignment into a reality.

Leading this project was my first real test as a problem solver. Because my plan was practical and had a clear goal, many of my peers chose to join my group. As the leader, I was responsible for more than just a good idea. I had to coordinate with my teammates and organize our visits. The biggest challenge came when we had to present our proposal. We stood before our AVID class, our teacher, the program director, the school secretary, and the principal. It was a high pressure moment, but it taught me that leadership requires the courage to stand behind your vision.

The success of that group is one of my proudest achievements. Even though I am no longer in that specific class, the volunteer group is still going strong today. To me, this is the definition of leaving a legacy. It is not about keeping the power for yourself. It is about building something so solid and meaningful that it can continue to help people even after you have moved on.

This experience directly informs how I hope to demonstrate leadership in the future. I am pursuing a career in nursing or the healthcare field. My time organizing nursing home visits gave me a front row seat to the impact that compassionate care can have on people. It even motivated me to get my Certified Nursing Assistant certification. In the medical field, I plan to be someone who focuses on solutions but also the whole person. Everyone knows that hospitals can be chaotic and stressful. I want to be the nurse who steps up to organize care and solve problems for my patients and my team. I want to take the same initiative I showed in AVID and apply to situations in my career and everyday life.

In the future, I plan to demonstrate leadership through my work in the healthcare field. My goal is to become a registered nurse and provide high quality care to those in my community. Getting my Certified Nursing Assistant certification was the first step in this journey. It allowed me to see that medical leadership is about more than just clinical skills. It is about being a reliable presence for patients during their most difficult moments. As a nurse, I want to be the person who anticipates problems before they arise. I want to lead by being a calm and organized advocate for every person under my care.
