Senior Leadership Scholarship Essay 16

“Leadership is unlocking people’s potential to become better.” This quote by Bill Bradley resonates with me deeply. In my role as president of the theatre department, I have had the privilege of uplifting and inspiring others, not only within our department but also throughout the school. Moving forward, my goal is to continue helping others realize their potential, pushing them to be the best version of themselves.
As president of the theatre department, I am entrusted with the responsibility of planning, organizing, and running events for the year, alongside the other officers. A crucial part of my role is ensuring that all ideas, needs, and concerns voiced by students, parents, teachers, and administrators are passed along to our director. This ensures that everyone has a voice in our department, regardless of their role. One of my key duties is leading rehearsals in the absence of our director. I gather all involved participants to ensure that we stay on schedule while our director focuses on other tasks. Delegating these responsibilities to trusted individuals is essential for managing time and maintaining progress. Through this role, I have honed important skills like communication, organization, and teamwork. I am proud to say that I have helped our department grow, creating a drama-free and inclusive environment for everyone involved. We’ve managed to execute more productions in shorter periods, a testament to the efficiency and unity that I’ve worked to foster.
Before I became involved in theatre, I was a very shy person. I often stayed within my comfort zone, surrounded only by a small circle of friends. But as I became more integrated into the theatre department, I realized that I wanted to be a leader who could inspire my peers to grow beyond what they thought was possible. My journey began when I was promoted to historian, a role that made me realize the power of my voice. I quickly learned that if I wanted others to believe in me, I had to be vocal and assertive. One of the most challenging but rewarding experiences was helping a group, initially divided by jealousy and envy, come together as a cohesive unit. It was incredibly fulfilling to watch peers work through their differences and support each other toward a common goal. I’ve witnessed many of my peers push themselves, not only to secure roles they wanted but also to strengthen their friendships so they could succeed together. This sense of unity was my primary focus when I became president, and I believe my team and I have succeeded in fostering it. Along with promoting unity, I focused on being an understanding, mindful, and efficient leader, ensuring that everyone could confidently place their trust in me.
Looking to the future, I aspire to be a resource for others, whether it’s offering guidance on an assignment in college or leading a group project to success. Ultimately, my goal is to lead my own business as a vocal coach, and even become the music director for Broadway shows. I know that leadership is a skill that can always be improved, and I’m eager to continue developing mine. As I enter college, I plan to take courses on leadership, which will allow me to further hone my skills. I am also excited about the opportunity to connect with peers on a deeper level, learning from them and finding new ways to engage with people and projects. My leadership journey is just beginning, and I look forward to applying everything I’ve learned to my future endeavors in both the classroom and my professional career.
