Senior Leadership Scholarship Essay 17
When I was in elementary school, we had a lot of illegal dumping around my school. There were always trash bags all over the bridge and random clutter and bulky items all over the streets. It was beginning to become so bad that it was hard to look at the school because of the gross sight. We finally started to get sick of it and that was when 5th-grader me had the idea to email the news. I figured that the more people that we spread awareness to, the more we would get our voices heard and as we got more attention, the illegal dumping would stop. As a class, we stepped up and took initiative and decided not only was it time to lead the community into action, but also lead our classmates into action.
Although it was a class effort, being the leaders was a team effort. Getting the news to respond back to my email was a huge step as a leader. I would constantly email them and make sure everything sounded perfect just so I could get their attention to what we were trying to get them to notice. Even though it was a group effort, it still was a huge leadership experience in my life. The illegal dumping around the school eventually stopped because of what my classmates and I had done. We lead our community into the correct direction and the more people we lead, the more people that get on board. Eventually, they put up signs around the area that stated fines for illegal dumping. This was a very amazing outcome and now, the future generations of my elementary school can see what an amazing movement that their past alumni created and know that they can make motivational moves that will benefit the community as well.
I hope to demonstrate leadership in my future by creating large movements like the one I created in the past. I got my classmates and school the attention that they needed to stop a horrific movement of creating a dirty environment. I want to be a person who takes charge and sees the problems that my community has and fixes them urgently. Leadership is important and isn’t a one person job. You always need a team, so I will lead others into a path that strengthens my community. Demonstrating leadership benefits the world in so many ways that most people wouldn’t even imagine. Issues will start out so small and get bigger and bigger if no one takes action and decides to stop it. Sometimes, people are afraid to take action because they don’t know what results they will get in the end or they don’t have the assistance necessary. It is always best to lead other peers and people around you into the right direction when it comes to bettering the environment because you can always be their inspiration and motivation to strive and create a better place.
Having that experience in 5th grade has opened my eyes to a lot of things in my present and I know that I will see even more things that will need to be changed in my future. I plan on applying leadership to my everyday life and using my leadership skills in my future medical career and whatever doors open in my life.
