Senior Leadership Scholarship Essay 48

A point in time in which I have demonstrated leadership in my school and community is when I decided to present a project I was involved hin over the summer for my school. Over the summer I participated in the ‘Birth of Sumner Project’ alongside three other students. We worked with Kansas City Kansas Community College Professors, Sumner High School Alumni, and people of the community in order to create a traveling exhibit that is showcased in Kansas City Kansas schools, as well as a website that provides information of our findings. We were asked to present the banners we designed for the school, superintendent, board members, as well as Sumner High School alumni. None of the other students that I worked with in the project wanted to be the one to speak in front of the school. I took it upon myself to be the one to say a speech. I did this not just for my own benefit or gain but because I wanted to represent us as a whole, everyone who participated in the making of this project. Although none of the other students spoke, I still made sure their voices were heard in my speech. My speech consisted of what the project was about, our goals, and what I enjoyed and gained out of the project.
I hope to keep this same mentality with me throughout my life. I hope to use my voice to be able to speak for those who can’t. It is devastating that many people don’t have the resources or chances to have their voices heard and ideas shared. I hope that I will be able to have access in those spaces in the future that will allow me to conduct change. As a real estate agent you have the connections and tools to step into those spaces to advocate for people and stand up for what is right. You are able to speak for others and have their voices heard. A real estate agent works with and for the community. Being a leader means to take a stand for people and to do not only what is right but what is necessary. It is necessary as human beings to stick up for others, those who can not advocate for themselves. I feel as though that is my job as a person, to utilize my resources, my knowledge, and my voice to uplift the community and others. Far too many people have abused their power. Many people have been stepped on and crushed because of the evils of the world. I want to be a part of the reason that that changes. I want to be able to give the confidence to someone to speak or aid in any way I can. Even if it is just a small group of people or even just a single individual. Being a leader does not mean that you get all of the spotlight to yourself. Being a leader means you bring others in the spotlight with you.
