Senior Leadership Scholarship Essay 50

In my historically Black, 160-year-old high school, I strive to demonstrate leadership and carry on the proud legacy through cultural events, educational campaigns, and collaboration. In sophomore year, I curated and displayed over 30 powerful quotes for Women’s History Month, a tradition that continues annually. I collaborated with my peers to organize Culture Night, showcasing the diversity of our school through student and special guest performances. In junior year, I initiated conversations about preventing sexual violence against female students, leading to several students speaking out against the neglect and prompting discussions about consent education. I also took charge of designing and updating a bulletin board monthly with themes such as sexual assault awareness, indigenous history, and untaught Black history. This year, as Student Communications Liaison, I have led mediation efforts between student protesters and administration in discussions about how to address sexual misconduct. My leadership in this area inspired solutions such as town hall meetings to address sensitive topics that we typically don’t learn about, such as consent education.

Additionally, as Vice Chairwoman of the Black Archives Youth Coalition Network, I’ve organized impactful events for my Kansas City community including a women’s empowerment conference, summer literacy camp, and voter registration drive. Currently, I’m spearheading planning a conference to celebrate and honor local Black culture, fostering community pride and unity.

These efforts have educated and culturally enriched my communities while inspiring others to carry on the legacy. I take pride in my communities’ rich history and diversity and am honored to have contributed to their ongoing impacts. I look forward to bringing this passion for education and collaboration to my future college campus and city.

In college, I plan to take on roles as a leader and advocate in student organizations and my broader Kansas City community. I will contribute to these teams by leading healthy, inclusive discussions about community improvement. I will also organize campaigns focused on educating people about various important topics we don’t hear enough about including deeper black history, consent education, and American policies. I strive to foster greater community empowerment and cooperation, leading to increased collaboration, productivity, and global satisfaction. The fight against injustices creates a safer, more equitable world for everyone.
