Alumni Essay 55

When I first heard about the 20/20 Leadership program, I was a freshman who was unsure of myself and uncertain about the path I wanted to take. At that point in my life, I did not fully understand what leadership meant or how much it could shape my future. I only knew that I had people around me who believed in me and encouraged me to take the opportunity set out in front of me , even when I doubted myself they wouldn’t stop believing in me . Looking back, that moment of hesitation turned into one of the most meaningful decisions I have made, because 20/20 Leadership helped guide me toward becoming a confident leader and someone others can look up to. Someone my people can say we can do this too.

Throughout my walk  in 20/20 Leadership, I’ve learned that leadership is not about authority or being the loudest person in the room. It’s about responsibility, communication, and setting an example even when no one is watching. The program taught me how to listen to others, work as part of a team, and understand that every decision I make can have an impact on those around me. These lessons pushed me to grow not only as a leader, but also as a person who is more aware, disciplined, and respectful of others in both school and everyday situations.

Because of what I learned in 20/20 Leadership, I began to apply these skills in my everyday life. I am now recognized as a leader among my peers and am often expected to set the same standards . In my JROTC program, I serve as a First Sergeant, a role that requires accountability, structure, and strong communication. In this position, I help guide other my classmates , maintain discipline, and support my company by encouraging teamwork and positive behavior. Being trusted with this responsibility showed me how far I have come from the unsure freshman I once was, and it motivates me to continue improving.

I plan to use what I have learned from 20/20 Leadership in the future by continuing to guide and mentor other young adults. I want to help others find a path that leads them to success, not only for themselves but also for the people they care about. Whether it is encouraging good decision-making, promoting discipline, or simply being someone others can depend on, I intend to carry these leadership values into everything I do, no matter where life takes me.

For me , leaving a legacy means making a positive impact that lasts beyond my time in a program or position. It means being remembered not just for what I achieved, but for how I helped others grow and improve themselves. My legacy is built through the example I set, the respect I show, and the influence I have on those who come after me. Thanks to 20/20 Leadership, I understand that true leadership is about service, consistency, and character, and that is the legacy I hope to leave behind.
