Alumni Essay 48

Throughout my high school journey I have learned that leadership is not simply about holding a title or being in charge, but about growth, service, and making a meaningful difference. My participation in Youth Lead KC was a defining experience that transformed my understanding of leadership and helped shape the person I am becoming. Through this program, I gained confidence, learned to trust my voice, and developed a deeper sense of responsibility to my community.

When I first joined Youth Lead KC, I felt uncertain about my ability to lead. Although I had previously held leadership roles, I often questioned whether my ideas truly mattered. The program pushed me to step outside of my comfort zone, engage in thoughtful discussions, and collaborate with students from different backgrounds. Listening to their experiences opened my eyes to new perspectives and strengthened my empathy. Over time, I became more confident in expressing my ideas while also learning the importance of listening. I realized that leadership is not about being the loudest voice in the room, but about creating space for every voice to be heard and valued.

One of the most impactful aspects of Youth Lead KC was its emphasis on service and community involvement. Through hands-on projects and group initiatives, I witnessed how even small actions could have a powerful impact. These experiences taught me that leadership is founded on compassion, commitment, and accountability. I learned that showing up, supporting others, and taking responsibility can inspire real change. Seeing the difference our efforts made within the community motivated me to become more intentional with my actions and more aware of how I can positively influence those around me.

Youth Lead KC also helped me grow emotionally. I learned how to communicate more effectively, manage challenges with resilience, and remain calm under pressure. These lessons strengthened my patience, adaptability, and perseverance. Through setbacks and successes I learned to trust myself more and recognize that growth often comes from discomfort. This mindset continues to shape the way I approach obstacles, encouraging me to lead with courage rather than fear.

In the future, I plan to carry these lessons with me into college, my career, and my everyday life. I hope to pursue a nursing major where leadership, empathy, and teamwork are crucial. I want to be a source of comfort for patients during their most vulnerable moments and an advocate for families in need. The skills I gained through Youth Lead KC being communication, collaboration, and emotional intelligence will help guide me as I work alongside others to create positive change in the healthcare setting. I also plan to remain involved in community service, continuing to uplift and empower those around me.

To me, “leaving a legacy” means being known for being the change that everyone needed to see. It means choosing to act with courage, compassion, and integrity, even when it is difficult. I want my impact to be measured not by titles, but by the lives I touch and the encouragement I give. Leaving a legacy is about stepping up when something needs to change and inspiring others to believe that change is possible. If I can be remembered as someone who led with heart, created spaces where others felt heard and valued, and worked to make my community stronger, then I will know I have truly left a meaningful legacy.
