Joining the 20/20 Leadership program during my junior year, I was immediately pushed into an assignment that required public speaking. I along with a few others had to create a project that fixed an issue within our school. While we only had to present for five minutes, it was not something that I was used to. I was very nervous that I would mess up or that I didn’t thoroughly explain all the information. It took me some time to get used to having to speak publicly. My speaking has also grown as it pertains to speaking directly to people. Sometimes I don’t know what to say or have anything in mind to say when speaking to people about certain topics. However, attending the Business and career expos provided by 20/20 Leadership has allowed me to grow in the area of communication.

I know that both public speaking and communicating with others personally are great skills for leaders. Public speaking is something that might have to be done if you are a leader. If you are promoting a program or proposing an idea, it requires speaking in front of people. I know that communicating with people personally is something that I have to do every day. Being an effective communicator allows both parties to understand each other.

I will use what I have learned in the future on an everyday basis and in the workplace. Outside of the nursing career that I want to pursue, I am passionate about leading young children to a great future. I believe that children are the future. I plan to use what I have learned to speak to younger children about how to be great leaders. Even shy children are capable of being great leaders. Sometimes all it takes is stepping outside of your comfort zone.

Within my career in nursing, I want to communicate with patients but also other healthcare professionals in the workplace. I believe that communication is extremely important when it comes to the livelihood of others. I have to communicate to figure out the best treatment options and ways to better the knowledge of patients on ways they can better their health.

Leaving a legacy means to have a lasting impact on future generations. Someone creating a lasting impact has put in the work to make a change in their community or situation that is carried on in the future. A person will always be remembered for creating such monumental changes for the betterment of those after them. The legacy left means that their actions will forever be remembered and cherished. There has been meaning and substance put behind leaving a legacy.

I think that even if one creates something that in the future might be changed in a way, it is still a legacy. As time goes on things change, but that doesn’t minimize the efforts of a person’s work. I know that having a legacy creates much respect for those who have come before me. I will always feel the care that they have had to think about future generations when creating their legacy.
