My most important leadership experience during high school was the 20/20 Junior Olympics. During this experience, my group and I were tasked with figuring out how we could implement something in our school to leave a legacy. That is when we came up with the idea of hygiene stations in the school bathrooms for students to use when they need. We needed to put our plan in a presentation to present to judges of the 20/20 Junior Olympics. In constructing and putting the presentation together, I had a responsibility of conducting interviews of peers in the high school level to get their input on whether or not the hygiene stations in the bathrooms were a good thing to implement. After collecting these interviews, I compiled a short video of the responses I received and put them into a presentation. Some of the members in my group were also helping to conduct interviews, but I was the one making sure that the interviews were being conducted in a timely manner and that the questions that were being asked were clear and concise. Putting the presentation together also was a collaborative effort and luckily we did an excellent job on it that we got the funding to implement the stations in our school. This proved that we were able to come up with something and fully deliver it successfully.

From this experience, I learned how to work with a group of people given an assigned task to achieve an end result. Listening and communicating were a big part of this project since it took a lot of brainstorming to figure out exactly how we wanted the project to look and turn out. Being able to work together in such a large group is something that I also learned because I am used to working in small groups. Making sure that everyone is heard and their ideas get put into the project. Learning how to take constructive feedback and give it to others is an important thing because without it progress can not be made collectively as a group if one person thinks that their ideas are always right or be modified. Being grateful for the feedback that I received is also an important quality that leaders have when. Another thing that I learned was how to come up with a solution to better a situation for many people as a whole. Having the ability to be selfless, think about others and take the charge to carry out the plan. The difference between a good leader and a great leader is that a great leader leaves a legacy along with leading by example. This is something that we intended to do with the project, hoping it would be impactful and leave a positive impact on those who come after us.

This has inspired me to further my education because when I grow up I want to be a doctor. Being a doctor means that you also need to be a leader and make good decisions on how to take care of the patient. Leaving a legacy is something that I intend to do by taking the skills that I learned from being a doctor and taking it to other countries to help impact others in need. Learning this from my project will help me to be able to work with future doctors to come up with a solution to an inert problem that presents a challenge to others and to be able to take charge with my actions to achieve a solution. In the meantime, as I go to college I plan to take on a few leadership roles in different organizations. Overtime, I hope to build my leadership skills to leave a lasting legacy in the things that I do.
