I’ve always believed that leadership goes beyond merely guiding a group or making decisions; it’s about embodying qualities that inspire others. While holding the title of “leader” is one form, leadership also manifests in how we carry ourselves, whether it’s in school, sports, or future pursuits like college. Demonstrating this through my role as a student-athlete not only showcases my past leadership but also reflects my commitment to continue as a role model.
In school, classmates and teachers often encouraged me to take the lead. I’ve embraced this by being a role model, actively participating in class tasks, volunteering to assist classmates, and contributing to the Student Council, where I organize assemblies and engage in community service initiatives like food drives. These actions not only demonstrate leadership but also serve as examples for others and myself.
My leadership also shows in the athletic field where I’ve held leadership roles in football, weightlifting, and baseball teams. As a linebacker, I lead plays and guide teammates. In weightlifting, I assist others with their techniques and seek feedback on my performance. Additionally, I’ve served as a baseball captain, learning valuable lessons in effective leadership through these experiences.
Transitioning to college, I intend to continue to be a role model with my leadership roles. Joining organizations like the Black Student Union and supporting teammates as a freshman student-athlete are avenues where I can continue to lead my teammates. Moreover, pursuing internships aligns with my goal of assuming leadership roles not only in my career but also in my personal development.
While the general image of a leader involves guiding a group toward success, true leadership often occurs without explicit titles. As a role model in school and athletics, and with plans to continue this in college, I aim to demonstrate leadership in its fullest sense. My experiences as a student-athlete in high school have prepared me for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, and I look forward to continuing my journey as a leader in college and beyond.
