Alumni Essay 47

Being a member of the Youth Lead KC program has provided me with opportunities that have already begun shaping my future. Although my time in the program has been short, the experiences, connections, and lessons I have gained have made a lasting impact on how I view responsibility, leadership, and personal growth. Through the Youth Lead KC program, I have not only learned practical skills needed for success but also discovered more about who I am and who I want to become. One of the most valuable aspects of the program has been learning how to work effectively with others. Collaborating with peers from different backgrounds has allowed me to see new perspectives and further my understanding of the importance of communication, teamwork, and respect. I have learned that leadership is about listening, encouraging, and helping to move toward a shared goal; instead of standing above others or controlling situations. Participating in group activities, discussions, and leadership exercises pushed me outside of my comfort zone and helped build confidence in my ability to contribute in many ways. The program introduced me to important life and career skills. Those skills will continue to benefit me after high school. I have learned how to properly plan for goals, network with people I may not know, and complete self-evaluations. These experiences helped me recognize my strengths while also identifying areas where I can continue to grow. Understanding how to reflect on my actions and accept constructive feedback has made me more responsible and prepared to take on leadership roles in the future. I plan to use what I have learned by applying these leadership skills in school, future jobs, and my community. I would like to continue developing my communication skills and become someone that others can depend on. Whether I am working on a team project, pursuing a career, or supporting community initiatives, I will carry forward the lessons of accountability, organization, and empathy that the Youth Lead KC has taught me. The program has shown me that leadership is not limited to one position, but it is demonstrated through everyday actions and choices. When I think about “leaving a legacy,” I think about creating and developing a positive impact that continues after I am gone. I believe that a legacy is not defined by recognition or success alone, but by how a person influences others and contributes to something that is greater than themselves. To me, leaving a legacy means building, helping, and standing up for what I believe in so that future generations can benefit from the efforts. Leaving a legacy means planting seeds of kindness, leadership, and opportunity that will continue to grow over time. I want my own legacy to reflect growth, compassion, and perseverance. I hope to inspire others through leading by example. By showing responsibility, empathy, and determination in everything that I do. Even through small actions, such as encouraging someone, volunteering, or helping a team succeed, can create a lasting change. My goal is to use the skills that I have gained through this program in order to make meaningful contributions to my community and help create a better future for those who come after me. Youth Lead KC has helped me to understand that leadership begins with intention and action. The program has encouraged and pushed me to believe in my potential and to recognize that I have the ability to make a difference. I hope to build a life that reflects purpose and service. One that leaves behind a legacy that inspires growth, unity, and hope for the generations to come.
